Building a character

The builder opens with a gender selection and a style grid. On the Male path there is exactly one usable style. Realistic V2, Anime, Fantasy and Cartoon each carry a COMING SOON label, so four of the five advertised options do nothing. The single working style also displays a 2 coin badge, which means the token meter starts before a character exists.

The steps after that cover ethnicity and age, then eye color, hair color and hairstyle, then body type. All of them are picker grids with fixed options. There is a Custom entry on eye color, though most choices are locked to a palette.

Naming is the only open text field in the main flow.

Voice, relationship, personality and occupation are each selected from fixed lists. My test character came out as a playful, innocent nurse called Marta after four taps. Fast, and beginner friendly, but two people making a character on this platform will land on similar results more often than the marketing suggests.

An Advanced Details panel sits at the bottom of the flow, labelled optional. Greeting Message and Tags both carry a padlock and an ADV badge, so two fields inside the character builder are reserved for a paid tier before the user has sent a single message. Hobby, Scenario, Physical Details and Outfit stayed open.

The conversation, and where it ends

The chat itself is the strongest part of the product. I opened with a message containing several specific personal details, and the reply picked up every one of them, added a light joke and closed with a question that invited a response. Timestamps show no perceptible delay. If the rest of the platform matched this, the pricing would be easier to defend.

Five messages later, the conversation stopped.

A modal appeared stating that the free message allowance was used up, and that upgrading unlocks chats, photos and videos. There is no partial free experience underneath it. Five messages is not a trial of a companion product, it is a demonstration. Every review recommending readers "test the free tier before subscribing" is describing something that does not exist here.

Image generation and prompt accuracy

Image generation runs on a separate free trial allowance, so I used it to test how closely output follows instructions. My prompt named a futuristic city at sunset with glass skyscrapers, neon lighting, flying cars moving between buildings, pedestrians downtown, and asked for 4K quality.

The atmospheric parts landed. Sunset colour, wet reflective asphalt, neon signage and a crowded pavement all appear, and the lighting has genuine depth. The literal instructions did worse. Every vehicle in the frame sits on the road, so the most specific request in the prompt was ignored outright. The buildings are stone and brick rather than glass, which reads as present-day rather than futuristic. Shop signage dissolves into unreadable characters under any real inspection.

The delivered file measures 1216 by 832 pixels. That is a little over one megapixel against a prompt asking for 4K, which is roughly eight.

Video generation

Video is advertised on the homepage and appears in the upgrade modal as an unlocked benefit. It cannot be tested without paying. The Generate Video button is greyed out and carries the line "Subscribe to unlock video generation" beneath it.

The length selector is worth reading closely even without access. The two options are 5 seconds and 10 seconds. Published plan data puts a single video at 20 tokens, so subscribers on the entry plan should work out how many ten-second clips their monthly coin allowance actually covers before committing.

The age check

DarLink hosts adult content and its terms are firm about who may use it. Section 2.1 states that users must be at least 18, that the service is strictly intended for adults, and that automated systems or staff may suspend an account pending age verification if there is reason to believe a user is underage.

What the product does is different. Switching the SFW toggle to NSFW produces a single dialog asking the user to confirm they are 18 or over. Clicking it once turns the toggle on. It did not appear again in later sessions, and no document upload, facial estimation or third party check was requested at any point.

Self declaration of this kind now sits below the standard required in several major markets. The UK Online Safety Act has demanded highly effective age assurance since July 2025, European Commission guidance under the Digital Services Act states that checking a box is not acceptable, and 25 US states had age verification laws in force as of June 2026. Whether DarLink falls under any particular regime depends on its operator and the markets it serves, which is a question this article does not attempt to settle. The gap between what the terms describe and what the interface does is visible to anyone who signs up.
